What Is a Portrait?

Does a portrait need to begin with a face? Or can it begin with a conversation? A twisted rose, broken glass, a staircase leading towards the light—these are the images through which my paintings emerge. This journal is an exploration of those conversations, the paintings they inspire, and what they have taught me about seeing, portraiture and lived experience.
